This creamy chicken pasta is one of those easy dinners you’ll want to make again and again. It comes together in just 25 minutes and uses simple ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.
The creamy garlic parmesan sauce is rich and flavorful, while the lemon juice and fresh rosemary add a little brightness. It’s cozy, comforting, and perfect for a busy weeknight.
I also love that you can easily switch things up depending on what you have on hand. Use chicken thighs instead of chicken breast, swap the pasta for your favorite shape, or use leftover chicken to make dinner even faster.
For Creamy Chicken Pasta
- Pasta – I used 200g dried fettuccine, but you can use any pasta you like. Fresh pasta works well too!
- Chicken Breast – A single chicken breast works great for this recipe, but feel free to use chicken thighs for extra flavor.
- Olive Oil – Used to cook the chicken for a crispy exterior.
- Flour – Lightly dust the chicken with flour before cooking to create a nice golden crust.
- Butter – Adds richness to the sauce while sautéing the garlic.
- Garlic – Fresh garlic cloves, finely chopped, bring tons of flavor to the sauce.
- Fresh Rosemary – Adds a fragrant, herbaceous note that complements the cream.
- Cream – The base of the sauce for that velvety, creamy texture.
- Black Pepper – For a little seasoning and kick.
- Lemon Juice – Brightens up the sauce and cuts through the richness.
- Parmesan Cheese – Finely grated for a nutty, cheesy depth to the sauce.
- Lemon Zest & Extra Rosemary – For finishing touches and extra freshness.
For the Sauce
- Cream – Essential for the creamy texture.
- Parmesan – Finely grated for the best melt and flavor in the sauce.
- Lemon Juice – Balances the richness of the cream with a citrusy lift.
How to Make Creamy Chicken Pasta
This chicken pasta is really simple to make and comes together in just a few easy steps.
Cook the pasta. Cook the pasta in salted water, stopping about 1 minute before the recommended cooking time. Before draining, save 1 cup of the pasta water. You’ll use some of it to help bring the sauce together.
Prepare the chicken. Flatten the chicken breast so it cooks evenly, then season both sides and lightly dust with flour.
Cook the chicken. Heat the olive oil in a pan and cook the chicken for about 2 minutes on each side, or until fully cooked. Wrap it in foil and set aside while you make the sauce.
Make the sauce. Melt the butter in the same pan, then sauté the garlic and rosemary. Add the cream and bring it to a gentle simmer.
Add the parmesan. Stir in the parmesan a little at a time, letting it melt into the sauce. Add the black pepper and lemon juice.
Thicken the sauce. Add ¼ cup of the reserved pasta water and let the sauce simmer for 2–3 minutes.
Combine. Add the cooked pasta and let everything simmer together for another 1–2 minutes. The pasta will soak up all that delicious creamy sauce.
Finish and serve. Slice the chicken and add it on top or mix it through the pasta. Finish with lemon zest, fresh rosemary, and extra parmesan if you like.
Recipe Variations
You can easily change this recipe to make it just the way you like it.
Chicken: Swap the chicken breast for chicken thighs if you prefer darker meat. You can also use two chicken breasts if you want more chicken.
Leftover chicken: Have cooked chicken in the fridge? Use it! Chop or shred the chicken and add it to the sauce during the last few minutes, just until warmed through.
Pasta: Fettuccine is my go-to for this recipe, but you can use spaghetti, penne, or any pasta you have on hand. Fresh pasta works well too.
Lighter sauce: If you want a lighter option, use half-and-half instead of heavy cream. You can also check out my Garlic Parmesan Chicken Pasta without cream.
More lemon: If you love lemon, add a little extra lemon zest on top before serving. It adds a fresh pop of flavor and balances the creamy sauce.
Tips for the Best Creamy Chicken Pasta
Save your pasta water. Don’t forget this step! The starchy pasta water helps loosen the sauce and helps everything come together.
Add the parmesan slowly. Stir it in 2–3 small additions instead of adding it all at once. This helps it melt smoothly into the cream.
Keep the garlic from browning. You only need about 1 minute to sauté the garlic. You want it fragrant, not browned.
Don’t overcook the pasta. Since the pasta goes into the sauce at the end, cooking it 1 minute less than the package directions gives it the perfect texture.
Don’t worry if the sauce looks thin. The sauce will thicken as it simmers and coats the pasta. If it gets too thick, add a splash of reserved pasta water.
Taste before serving. Give the sauce a quick taste before you serve it. You can always add a little more lemon, pepper, or parmesan if needed.
Mistakes to Avoid
This recipe is pretty simple, but a few little things can make a big difference.
Don’t skip the pasta water. Save some before draining the pasta. It’s an easy way to adjust the consistency of the sauce.
Don’t brown the garlic. Keep the heat around medium and sauté the garlic just until fragrant. Browning it can make the sauce taste bitter.
Don’t add the parmesan all at once. Adding it gradually gives it time to melt into the sauce.
Don’t cook the pasta until completely done. It will continue cooking when you toss it with the sauce.
Don’t leave the chicken in the pan while making the sauce. Once the chicken is cooked, set it aside. This helps prevent it from overcooking while you finish dinner.
How to Store Creamy Chicken Pasta
Have leftovers? Let the pasta cool and place it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
Creamy pasta will thicken as it chills, so don’t worry if it looks a little different the next day.
When you’re ready to reheat it, warm it gently on the stovetop or in the microwave. Add a small splash of water, milk, cream, or chicken broth if the sauce needs to loosen up.
For the best texture, only reheat the portion you plan to eat.
How to Serve Creamy Chicken Pasta
This creamy chicken pasta is hearty enough to serve on its own, but you can easily add a simple side to make it a full dinner.
We love serving it with a crisp green salad or some steamed vegetables. A little crusty bread is also perfect for soaking up the extra creamy sauce.
For serving, add a little lemon zest, fresh rosemary, and extra parmesan on top. It’s such a simple finishing touch, but it makes the whole dish taste fresh and flavorful.
And if you’re making this for a busy weeknight, don’t overthink it. The pasta, chicken, and creamy parmesan sauce already make a delicious meal all on their own.

- Boil salted water and cook the pasta, but stop 1 minute before the recommended cooking time.

Notes
Notes:
- Pasta: You can use any pasta you prefer, but fettuccine is a great choice. Weighing your pasta portions ensures the perfect sauce-to-pasta ratio.
- Sauce consistency: The sauce might seem too runny when you first add the pasta, but don’t worry—cream sauces thicken up quickly.
- Chicken: You can substitute chicken breasts with thighs for a more flavorful option, or use two breasts if you want more chicken. Feel free to cook the chicken your way—either pan-fry or slice it before dusting with flour.
- Non-cream version: If you prefer a lighter option, check out my Garlic Parmesan Chicken Pasta without cream.
Nutrition
- Can I use pre-cooked or leftover chicken to save time?
Definitely! Using leftover or pre-cooked chicken is a great shortcut. Simply chop or shred the chicken and toss it into the sauce during the last few minutes of cooking to warm it up.
- Do I have to cook the pasta separately?
It’s best to cook the pasta separately to get that perfect texture. But, if you’re in a rush, feel free to cook the pasta directly in the sauce—just make sure there’s enough liquid and stir occasionally.
- Can I swap out the chicken or pasta?
For sure! You can swap the chicken breast for chicken thighs if you want extra flavor. Any type of pasta works—fettuccine, spaghetti, penne—you name it.
- How can I lighten the sauce but still keep it creamy?
If you want to lighten up the sauce, use half-and-half instead of heavy cream. You can also add some extra butter to keep the richness without all the calories.
- The sauce is too thick, what should I do?
If the sauce gets too thick, simply add a bit of reserved pasta water or chicken broth. Just a splash will do the trick to get it back to the perfect creamy consistency.
