Easy 25-Minute Korean Ground Beef Rice Bowl

There’s something comforting about cooking a quick skillet of beef with garlic and ginger while rice steams on the stove.

The kitchen fills with the savory aroma of soy sauce and sesame oil, and before long you’re spooning warm rice into bowls and topping it with flavorful beef and fresh garnishes.

What I love most about this recipe is how easy it is.
It uses just a handful of ingredients and comes together in about 25 minutes.

That makes it perfect for nights when you want something homemade
but don’t have much time to cook.

The beef is rich and savory, the rice is fluffy, and the toppings add just the right amount of freshness and crunch. Make a batch tonight, and you might just find yourself coming back to it again and again.

For Korean Ground Beef Bowl

  • Ground Beef – I like using 80/20 ground beef because the little bit of fat adds great flavor while cooking.
  • Soy Sauce – this brings the salty, savory base that gives the beef its classic Korean-inspired flavor.
  • Sesame Oil – adds a nutty aroma and rich depth that makes the dish taste more authentic.
  • Garlic – freshly minced garlic gives the beef bold flavor and pairs perfectly with the soy sauce.
  • Ginger – a small amount adds warmth and brightness that balances the savory ingredients.
  • Green Onions – these add freshness and a mild onion flavor that lightens up the dish.
  • Salt and Pepper – used to season the beef and bring all the flavors together.

For Serving

  • Cooked Rice – fluffy jasmine, basmati, or brown rice works great as the base for the bowl.
  • Sesame Seeds – optional but great for a little crunch and nutty flavor.
  • Sliced Cucumber – adds freshness and a cool contrast to the warm beef.
  • Kimchi or Pickled Vegetables – perfect if you want a tangy, authentic Korean-style topping.

Optional Add-Ins

  • Vegetables – bell peppers, carrots, broccoli, or spinach can be added for extra color and nutrition.
  • Fried Egg – topping the bowl with a fried egg makes the dish richer and more satisfying.

Notes

Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 for optimal flavor)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce (or tamari for gluten-free)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger, minced
  • 2 green onions, chopped (plus extra for garnish)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups cooked rice (jasmine, basmati, or brown rice)
  • Optional toppings: sesame seeds, sliced cucumber, kimchi, or pickled vegetables
Optional Ingredients
  • Vegetables: bell peppers, carrots, broccoli, or spinach
  • Egg: a fried egg on top for added richness

Instructions

1. Prepare the Rice

Stove Method:
Rinse 1 cup of rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Combine with 2 cups of water in a pot. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 15 minutes until water is absorbed. Remove from heat and let it sit for 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork.
Rice Cooker:
Add rinsed rice and water to your rice cooker, close the lid, and let it cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
Instant Pot:
Combine rinsed rice and water in the pot. Seal the lid and cook on high pressure for 3 minutes, then allow a natural release.

2. Cook the Ground Beef

Brown the Beef:
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the ground beef. Use a spatula to break it apart as it cooks. Brown until it’s no longer pink, about 5–7 minutes.
Add Flavors:
Drain excess fat if necessary. Then, add the minced garlic and ginger, cooking for an additional 1–2 minutes until fragrant.
Season It Up:
Stir in the soy sauce, sesame oil, and chopped green onions. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Allow it to simmer for a couple of minutes so the flavors meld together.

3. Assemble the Bowl

Start with Rice:
Spoon a generous amount of cooked rice into the bottom of your bowl.
Layer the Beef:
Top the rice with the seasoned ground beef mixture.
Add Veggies:
If you’re using any additional vegetables, such as steamed broccoli or sliced bell peppers, add them on top or around the beef.
Garnish:
Finish with a sprinkle of sesame seeds, chopped green onions, and any other toppings you prefer, like kimchi or a fried egg.

  1. Can I use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef?
Absolutely! Ground turkey or chicken work just fine here. The flavor will be a little lighter than beef, but the garlic, ginger, and soy sauce still bring plenty of flavor to the bowl.
  2. What’s the best rice to serve with this?
Plain steamed white rice is the classic choice. Jasmine rice is my go-to because it’s soft and fragrant, but basmati or brown rice work great too.
  3. How do I keep the beef from drying out?
Cook the beef over medium-high heat and break it up as it browns so it cooks evenly. Don’t overcook it — once it’s no longer pink and coated in the sauce, you’re good to go.
  4. Can I make this ahead of time?
Yes! The beef mixture keeps well in the fridge for up to 3 days. Just reheat it in a skillet or microwave and serve it over freshly cooked rice.
  5. What toppings work best for this bowl?
A fried egg, sliced cucumber, shredded carrots, sesame seeds, or kimchi are all great options. They add freshness, crunch, and extra flavor that make the bowl even better.
