Recipe Notes
Ground beef: Lean ground beef works best here since it keeps the casserole hearty without adding too much excess grease. Be sure to drain the beef well after browning.
Green beans: Drain the green beans thoroughly before adding them to the casserole. Don’t forget to season this layer with salt and pepper to taste.
Cheese: Shredded cheddar creates the melty layer underneath the tater tots. For the best texture, keep the cheese beneath the tots rather than sprinkling it over the top.
Tater tots: There’s no need to thaw them first. Add the tater tots straight from the freezer and keep them on top so they can become crisp and golden as they bake.
Baking dish: Use an 8 or 9-inch baking dish with enough depth to comfortably hold all of the layers.
Doneness: Bake for 35 to 40 minutes at 375°F, or until the cheese is melted and the tater tots are golden brown.
