Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 package (16 ounces) frozen Tater Tots
  • 1 can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
  • 2/3 cup 2% milk or water
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

Cook the Meat and Onion

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • Place the ground beef or turkey and chopped onion in a large skillet. Cook over medium heat until the meat is fully browned and no pink remains. Drain away the excess fat, then season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste.

Assemble the Casserole

  • Transfer the cooked meat and onion mixture to a greased 2-quart baking dish.
  • Arrange the frozen Tater Tots over the meat.
  • In a separate bowl, combine the condensed cream of mushroom soup with the milk or water. Pour this mixture evenly over the potatoes.
  • Finish by sprinkling the shredded cheddar cheese over the top.

Bake

  • Bake the casserole uncovered for 30 to 40 minutes, or until everything is heated through and the cheese has melted.
  • Serve hot.

Notes

Recipe Notes

  • No need to thaw the Tater Tots. Add them straight from the freezer when assembling the casserole.
  • Be sure to drain the meat. After cooking the beef or turkey with the onion, drain off the excess fat before adding it to the baking dish.
  • Beef or turkey both work. Use whichever you prefer; the recipe calls for 3/4 to 1 pound.
  • Milk or water: Either can be used to combine with the condensed cream of mushroom soup. The recipe calls for 2/3 cup 2% milk or water.
  • Baking dish: Use a greased 2-quart baking dish so the casserole cooks according to the recipe.
  • Check for doneness: Bake uncovered at 350°F for 30–40 minutes, or until the casserole is heated through.
  • Storage: Keep leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • Freezing: Once completely cooled, freeze tightly wrapped or in airtight containers for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
