For Chicken Divan
- Chicken – 3 cups of cooked, chopped chicken (great for using leftovers or rotisserie chicken).
- Broccoli – 1 ½ pounds of fresh broccoli florets, cooked just until tender-crisp.
- Cheddar Cheese – 1 ½ cups shredded, divided. Use a sharp cheddar for extra flavor.
- Cream of Mushroom Soup – 1 can (10.5 oz), or you can substitute with cream of chicken soup.
- Sour Cream – ⅔ cup, for a creamy, tangy base.
- Milk – ½ cup, to thin the sauce slightly.
- Garlic Powder – ½ tsp for a subtle depth of flavor.
- Onion Powder – ½ tsp, a classic pairing with garlic.
- Dry Mustard Powder – ½ tsp, adds a bit of sharpness.
- Black Pepper – ½ tsp for seasoning.
- Seasoned Salt – ¼ tsp to enhance all the flavors.
For Topping
- Panko Breadcrumbs – 3 tbsp, these give a crunchy, golden topping.
- Butter – 1 tbsp, melted, to help the breadcrumbs brown nicely.
Step-by-Step Instructions to Make Chicken Divan Casserole
This recipe comes together quickly, and most of the work is simply layering everything together before the oven does the rest.
1. Preheat the oven
Start by preheating your oven to 400°F so it’s ready once the casserole is assembled.
2. Cook the broccoli
Bring a large pot of water to a boil, then cook the broccoli florets for 2 to 3 minutes, just until they’re tender-crisp. Drain them thoroughly so they don’t add extra moisture to the casserole.
3. Mix the creamy sauce
In a large bowl, stir together 1 cup of the shredded cheddar cheese, the condensed soup, sour cream, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, dry mustard powder, black pepper, and seasoned salt until everything is smooth and well combined.
4. Assemble the casserole
Fold the drained broccoli and chopped cooked chicken into the sauce until evenly coated. Transfer everything to a 9×13-inch casserole dish, then sprinkle the remaining cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
5. Add the topping
Mix the melted butter with the Panko breadcrumbs in a small bowl, then scatter the mixture evenly over the cheese layer for that classic golden finish.
6. Bake and serve
Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, until the casserole is bubbling around the edges and the topping is beautifully golden. Serve immediately on its own or over rice, noodles, or mashed potatoes.
Tips and Variations to Match Your Taste
A few small tips will help you get the best results every time.
- Don’t overcook the broccoli. It should be tender-crisp before it goes into the casserole since it will continue cooking in the oven.
- Drain the broccoli well after cooking so the sauce stays creamy instead of watery.
- Rotisserie chicken is a great shortcut, making this an even faster weeknight meal.
- Cream of mushroom or cream of chicken soup both work perfectly, so simply use your favorite.
- Mix the breadcrumbs well with the melted butter so they bake up evenly crisp and golden.
- Frozen broccoli can be used if needed. Just cook it according to the package directions and drain it thoroughly before adding it to the casserole.
- Make it ahead. Assemble the casserole, cover, and refrigerate for up to a day before baking when you’re ready to serve.
How to Serve Chicken Divan Casserole
This casserole is filling enough to be a meal on its own, but a simple side can turn it into an even more satisfying dinner.
Serve it over fluffy rice, buttered egg noodles, or creamy mashed potatoes to soak up every bit of the rich sauce. A crisp green salad with a light dressing makes a lovely fresh contrast, while warm dinner rolls or crusty bread are perfect for scooping up the last of the creamy goodness.

1. Can I use rotisserie chicken instead of cooking chicken from scratch?
Absolutely! Using rotisserie chicken is a huge time-saver. Just chop or shred it and you’re good to go—no need to cook the chicken yourself!
2. Do I really need to cook the broccoli before adding it to the casserole?
Yes, you’ll want to cook the broccoli just until it’s tender-crisp. It helps prevent it from getting too mushy when baked in the casserole. Plus, it’ll cook a bit more in the oven anyway!
3. Can I prep the casserole ahead of time and bake it later?
Yes, you can assemble the casserole up to a day ahead! Just cover it tightly, pop it in the fridge, and bake when you’re ready. You’ll love how easy it is to prep in advance!
4. What can I use if I don’t have cream of mushroom soup?
No worries! You can swap it with cream of chicken soup. The flavor will be slightly different, but still just as creamy and delicious.
5. How do I make the breadcrumb topping extra crispy?
For an extra crispy topping, toast the breadcrumbs in melted butter before sprinkling them over the casserole. This gives them a nice golden crunch!

Eliminated the sour cream due to allergies. Needs more cheese for the top, otherwise it is sparse and not overed very much. definitely needs “seasoned” salt!
